WALK-IN CLINIC VS URGENT CARE: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

When you become sick or injured, it’s always unexpected. When that happens, you want to know exactly where to go in order to get the best medical help for your needs. You may have seen clinics labeled “Urgent Care” facilities, like our Marque Urgent Care clinics, and others labeled “Walk-In” clinics. So, what’s the difference, and which one is right for you? We are here to help you answer those questions.

Walk-In Clinic

Walk-in clinics are designed to provide basic medical attention for common, non-life threatening issues. For example: colds, minor burns, rashes, nausea, etc. Some walk-in clinics also provide vaccinations and physicals.

Walk-in clinics originally came about as an option for the uninsured or underinsured to receive cheap, basic medical care. Anything life-threatening or requiring unique special attention would require visiting a hospital emergency room, not a walk-in clinic.

Walk-in clinics operate on a first-come-first-serve basis, with no appointments. Typically, the facility provides care from nurse practitioners, not licensed physicians. However, a physician is usually on call if needed.

Urgent Care Clinic

Urgent care clinics are better suited than walk-in clinics for handling serious issues. They treat all issues handled by walk-in clinics, plus some emergency-related situations. They came about as a way to relieve some of the burden of hospital emergency rooms. However, immediate life-threatening issues are still directed to emergency rooms, not urgent care clinics.

Besides the common ailments treated at walk-in clinics, urgent care facilities also handle medical issues such as broken bones, non-life-threatening trauma, administration of IVs, and more serious illnesses. Urgent care facilities are staffed with physicians and are first-come-first-serve.

We’re Here for You

Here at Marque Urgent Care, we strive to provide you the comprehensive care you deserve. That’s why we provide general wellness services, like those provided in most walk-in clinics, as well as the expertise and advanced capabilities of an urgent care facility. Besides our immediate care capabilities, we also provide concussion management and physical therapy.

Our team of physicians are available for immediate walk-in care, but also take appointment reservations at your convenience. We are open 7 days a week, most holidays, and operate for extended hours into the evening. You never know exactly when you will need medical attention– that’s why we strive to make the care available whenever you need it!
