There is a direct correlation between the mental and physical states of our body.  The food we eat can be beneficial or detrimental to our brains.  Additionally, the food we ingest can impact our brain’s long-term aging process.  What foods help our brain and what foods hurt our brain?

Who doesn’t want a laser-sharp mind that’s clear and focused?  Here are some foods that are healthy for your brain:

Healthy Brain Foods

Black Beans– These little legumes are filled with magnesium, folate, and protein.  Plus, they are inexpensive!  Studies indicate that magnesium can help with Alzheimer’s disease.  Additionally, they are heart-healthy; having good blow flow is good for your brain.

Whole Eggs– Eggs have vitamin D which is great for your brain.  Vitamin D consumption helps to slow down cognitive deterioration.  Be sure to eat the yolks!

Almonds and Almond Butter– Vitamin E is found in almonds; this vitamin is beneficial for your brain and it helps with Alzheimer’s disease.

Avocados– Avocados are filled with good fat.  This fruit is good for your heart which means it’s good for your brain because having healthy blow flow directly affects your cognitive abilities.

Wild Salmon– DHA (Omega-3 fatty acid) which is abundant in wild salmon improves your memory.

Broccoli– Broccoli is good for your memory because it’s packed with vitamin K.

Cherry Tomatoes– Lycopene which is found in this fruit not only protects you from depression-causing inflammation, but it also improves your memory.

Blueberries– Filled with antioxidants, blueberries are an anti-inflammatory fruit.  Organ inflammation can cause long-term brain issues.

Walnuts– Like salmon, walnuts are filled with Omega-3s which beneficial for memory and overall cognitive function.

Turmeric– This spice, which is found in mustard, is terrific for helping combat dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.  It is an anti-inflammatory food.

Spinach– Loaded with vitamin K, this veggie is great for your brain and helps to slow down cognitive decline.

 

Harmful Brain Foods

Soda and Diet Soda– These beverages contain BVO (brominated vegetable oil) which not only create memory loss, but also nerve issues.  Additionally, the artificial sweetener found in diet sodas makes it harder for you to focus.

Tuna– The high mercury levels in tuna are bad for your brain.  Better fish choices are wild salmon, sardines, or trout.

Foods Made with Partially Hydrogenated Oil (margarine, vegetable shortening, packaged snacks, pre-made baked goods, fried foods, coffee creamers)– Foods made with partially hydrogenated oil are not only very bad for your brain, but they can even cause brain shrinkage!

Ice Cream– The sugar and fat in ice cream compromise your cognitive abilities and impede your memory.  Abundant sugar and fat found in any food is bad for your brain.

Fried Food (French fries, donuts, chicken nuggets)– Fried food is bad for your heart, so it’s bad for your brain.

White Rice– White rice has a high glycemic index which negatively affects your brain’s health.

Alcohol– Heavy alcohol damages your brain.
